A review of Marissa Meyer's Alice in Wonderland retelling Heartless.

What an absolutely stunning and beautifully rendered retelling! Marissa Meyer crafts a version of Wonderland that manages to be both completely unique and wonderfully similar to the Wonderland that I loved from Lewis Carroll's novels. If you've ever wondered how the Queen of Hearts became so ruthlessly bloodthirsty, look no further than this book!

This retelling captures the story of Cath, a young girl who only wants to be a baker, and the tragic twist that has her falling down the rabbit hole Fate's decreed for her to follow, regardless of her own wishes. The tragedies that she experiences will shape her into one of the most infamous villains in literature.

Both the characters that are unique to this story and those that readers will recognize from Alice in Wonderland, like the Mock Turtle and the Jabberwock, have been given backstories that are tragically beautiful. Jest, the court joker, is a cleverly crafted new character who captured my heart completely after only being in the book for a little while. He's one of those characters that just leaps off the page and right into your heart.

Honestly I'm still digesting this book and trying to get over my devastation! I can definitely feel a book hangover coming from this one.
